"A Passion For Painting"
curated by Beth Nichols
October 12th through December 31st, 2013
This fall Nichols Gallery Annex brings together three artists, Ron Boehmer of Virginia and Peter Loftus of California, with their teacher, Raoul Middleman, who instilled in them a lifelong Passion for Painting. They all met at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, in the 1970’s.
A prolific painter whose expressive landscapes, cityscapes, still lives, and narratives. are represented in major collections, including the Metropolitan Gallery of Art in New York and the National Gallery in Washington, DC, Middleman, at age 78, is still inspiring students, teaching one class at MICA, and painting everyday.
Ron Boehmer and Peter Loftus have carried on his tradition and devoted their life to both teaching and painting. Boehmer has inspired numerous students in the area through his workshops; Loftus is a Professor of art at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Both have exhibited their work nationally, and last year, the two re-united with a two-person exhibition at Washington & Lee University in Virginia. That show was the inspiration for the exhibition at Nichols Gallery Annex.
Philip Koch, who joined the faculty at MICA after Boehmer and Loftus graduated, will also be exhibiting his work in the exhibition, along with one of his students, Jim Condron.
“A Passion For Painting,” will be on exhibit October 12th through the end of the year.
